Master glacier travel
The best way of becoming skillful with your crampons and ice axe for mountaineering is on the dry glacier in the summer time. The waves of ice are not only beautiful but provide the perfect training ground for gaining confidence in the different techniques for walking and climbing on the ice. This will prepare you well for future alpine climbing projects in the mountains as well as being a great day out in nature. You’ll also learn how to use the rope on a glacier and to do partner and self-rescue from a crevasse.
We can a run a 1 or 2 day glacier skills course and it can also be combined with other courses or guiding.
We look at most of or all the following subjects:

Move efficiently and safely
Mountaineering skill is the art of mastering fluid, efficient movement over potentially dangerous terrain albeit relatively easy from a rock climbing point of view. This requires learning to be good on your feet as well as scrambling. Additionally using the rope and your gear in the right way for the terrain and reading the route. These are some of the hardest skills to master, but very satisfying once you find yourself covering a lot of terrain as safely as possible.
This course is largely done in the terrain as it’s a real case of “practice makes perfect” with these skills. Chamonix or the Valais region of Switzerland work well.
The course covers some of or all the following subjects depending on your experience and objectives:
